Secondary school
“Acquisition of deeper knowledge”
Secondary school is divided in 3 parts:- Secondary I from 5th to 8th grade
- Secondary II – 9th and 10th grade, choice of Baccalaureates or Maturité programs
- Secondary III – 11th and 12th grade: choice of International Baccalaureate or French Baccalaureate diploma programs
Secondary I from 5th to 8th grade:
Students in grades 4 to 8 attend Secondary School I.
French-English bilingual instruction is mandatory in grades 4 to 6 and becomes optional as of grade 7.
Secondary II – 9th and 10th grade, choice of Baccalaureates or Maturité programs
As of grade 9, students have the choice between two possible orientations:
Students who wish to follow the Maturité program have a different curriculum than those who want to follow the French Baccalaureate or the International Baccalaureate programs.
The twofold orientation regroups 9th grade Maturité students who have chosen this type of general education which allows access to university studies mainly in Switzerland. This orientation requires a strong ability to cope with an important workload in each of a wide range of subjects.
Pre-Bac 9th grade regroups students who wish to focus on more specialized areas of study in a variety of subjects leading to university studies, in Switzerland and abroad. This curriculum also offers a wider range of possibilities including bilingual instruction than those proposed in the Swiss Maturité program. The Pre – Bac academic program is based on that of the French national curriculum for subjects studied in French, and the British National Curriculum for those taught in English.
At the end of the Pre-Bac 10th grade common core curriculum, students choose between the French Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate diploma program.
Pre-Bac optional subjects and the language of instruction are chosen after consultation between the students, parents, teachers and those in charge of the academic programs. Such a choice must take into account the students’ learning styles, interests and intentions for grades 11 and 12, graduation and University studies.
